Around the world in 80 words: How are your hotel guests planning their next trips?

Posted in Travel Trends  Last updated 1/12/2023

It’s hard to believe but we’re almost halfway through 2017 and it’s already time to see what travel trends have emerged in the opening months and how travellers will plan their trips over the next three months.

Sojern’s Global Travel Insights report is on hand to provide all the key information.

Early in 2017, Japan, Greece, and the Netherlands joined the top 10 list of most searched destinations – while January recorded the most bookings in the first three months of the year.

These cities were the most searched destinations by travellers in these regions:

  • North America – Miami
  • Latin America – Mexico City
  • Europe – London
  • Middle East and Africa – Paris
  • Asia-Pacific – Bangkok

Travellers from the Middle East and Africa were the only ones searching for destinations more frequently outside their region.

So let’s take a look at the long-haul travel planning trends for June…

North America

Cancun is the most popular search option followed by London and Paris. Individual travellers are the most common party at 64% with 12+ days proving to be the most likely trip duration. With schools on summer holidays and a holiday weekend in July, the most popular departure date is June 30.

Latin America

Miami, Madrid, and New York City head the list for most popular search destinations for travellers heading out of the LATAM region. More than 50% of trips will be for 12 days or more and travellers are looking to go away throughout the month of June with the most common departure dates being June 15 and 30.

Europe

Interestingly, Marrakech in Morocco ranks as the the third most searched destination for European travellers, behind only Bangkok and New York City on top. Saturday is by far the most popular day to plan travel, with 68% of travellers looking to travel alone. The top departure dates start in June. Europeans look to get away as soon as summer hits so hotels should engage them as soon as possible.

Middle East & Africa

London and Paris are again the big two destinations travellers are searching for in this region – and 57% aim to go for at least two week. The end of Ramadan (24th June) is big factor and many travellers look to take a holiday in celebration. Two of the most popular departure dates fall at the end of June on the 22nd and 23rd.

Asia-Pacific

London and Paris also dominate the search landscape for travellers from Asia and the Pacific. Ramadan also plays a key role in bookings here. With the fast ending on June 24, travellers value June 23 as a departure date to take long weekends.

With over a billion data points to analyse, Sojern’s data can be trusted to make accurate predictions and plans on when and how to engage travellers if they plan to visit your region.
