Passkeys explained: The complete security guide for hotel owners and managers

Posted in Resources  Last updated 15/01/2026

What are passkeys?

Passkeys are a modern, secure, way for software users to log-in to their accounts and services. They are a replacement for traditional passwords and typically use a physical key or biometric identifier such as a fingerprint or facial recognition. This allows users to sign into apps and websites in the same way they might unlock personal devices such as smartphones, allowing for better protection against hackers, scammers, and phishing attacks.

In this blog we’ll cover why passkeys are so crucial today and how they work, including considerations for SiteMinder customers after passkeys are introduced to the platform.

Why are passkeys and biometric ID important for hotel owners and managers?

Passkeys and biometric IDs are essential for combatting the growing threat to online security by hackers, scammers, and phishing. While protection is getting better, threats are also becoming more sophisticated and the volume of attacks shows no signs of slowing down.

It’s been reported that 1.2% of all emails that are sent are malicious, representing 3.4 billion phishing emails daily. In fact, 92% of Australian organisations have suffered a successful phishing attack and 84% of US-based organisations are now actively engaging in cyber security training.

Awareness and understanding the signs to look out for certainly helps keep your business secure, but measures like passkeys add another layer of security which can be vital.

Benefits of passkeys and biometric IDs include:

  • Stronger security: Passkeys eliminate the common security risks that are associated with traditional passwords – such as password hacking or theft.
  • Faster access: Biometrics like a fingerprint or facial recognition offer instant access for users for added convenience and time-savings.
  • User-friendly: Passkeys are built into a user’s device, meaning there’s no need to download additional apps or tools to login.
  • Quick and easy login: Unlike passwords, passkeys never need to be reset and can be used effortlessly while a user is on the move.

How do passkeys work in hotel property management systems?

In a hotel platform like SiteMinder, passkeys work by replacing traditional passwords to provide a more secure way of logging in to the system to manage your hotel’s distribution, revenue, reports, and more.

Instead of the typical username/email and password combination, users will be able to login much quicker and easier via a read of their fingerprint. The passkey can be enabled and managed once users configure Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). This is to ensure users will always have a way of logging in, even if they delete their passkey.

Even though passkeys present the most secure login option, in most cases users will still have the choice to login via traditional methods.

How do I set up passkeys for my SiteMinder account?

Existing SiteMinder customers can easily set up passkeys and biometric identifiers to secure their account. Here are the key steps:

  1. Getting started – First, you need to login to your account on a desktop device and navigate to ‘My account’.
  2. Setup MFA – This is done via an authenticator such as SiteMinder’s mobile app, an app such as Microsoft authenticator or a web browser authenticator. A full guide to MFA can be found at SiteMinder’s help centre.
  3. Create your passkey – After MFA is configured, you can create a passkey from your account page. You’ll need to login with your existing password and then wait for a prompt from your device to perform an action – such as scanning your fingerprint.
  4. Logging in – Once your passkey has been successfully created, you can start logging in more securely by choosing ‘Continue with a passkey’ when presented with the option on the login screen. Simply select the passkey method that is saved from your original setup.

Note that to access PAN details such as credit card numbers, you’ll still need to re-authenticate. You can also delete your passkey in your ‘My Account’ page for whatever reason.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs) about passkeys for property management systems

Can a passkey be used on multiple devices?

Yes, each passkey is tied to your unique device or password manager, such as your Google account. This means you will be able to use your passkey on any device that is logged-in your password manager.

Are passkeys safer than passwords?

Yes, passkeys provide a deeper level of security and safety than passwords, since a biometric identifier such as a fingerprint can be hacked or intercepted online like a password can. Passkeys are more immune to hacking and phishing than passwords, making them a superior protection measure.

Are all SiteMinder customers able to use passkeys?

No, since passkeys use biometric IDs like facial recognition and fingerprint scans, they are only available to users who have access to devices that support these options. If your device does not support this technology then you’ll have to continue to use MFA.

Is using passkeys a requirement for all SiteMinder users?

No, you do not need to configure passkeys to continue logging into or using SiteMinder’s platform to manage your hotel. Passkeys are simply another option by which you can strengthen the security of your account. You are not forced to use them.
