SiteMinder: Domestic travel rush gives German hotels a critical boost for the summer

  Posted in Press Releases

Berlin, Germany – New data by SiteMinder, the global hotel industry’s leading guest acquisition platform, confirms that German locals have been swift to arrange their summer holiday plans, albeit closer to home to provide a much-needed boost for the country’s accommodation and tourism sector. SiteMinder’s World Hotel Index, based on the booking data of 35,000 hotels globally, reveals that domestic travellers will constitute 78 percent of all hotel guest arrivals in Germany this month and August, compared with 62 percent during the same period last year.

The finding comes amid a worldwide rise in domestic trips, even during the European summer. Across Germany, domestic travel has pushed hotel booking volumes to above 50 percent of 2019 levels for over a month and as high as 83.5 percent year-over-year in Hamburg, where locals are flocking to enjoy the port city’s scenic lakes and outdoor activities.

Speaking on the findings, Clemens Fisch, SiteMinder’s regional director for EMEA, says, “More than ever we are seeing Germany’s local businesses being supported by local travellers, which is very encouraging for the country’s hoteliers who need the support during this most critical period. Germany offers a wealth of natural beauty in the summer months, making it an ideal destination for locals to stay and explore during this time of reduced international travel.”

Germany currently leads the trend of domestic rises among Europe’s most visited countries. Compared with Germany’s 78 percent, the World Hotel Index shows that less than 65 percent of hotel arrivals in France and Spain, and less than 50 percent in Italy, will comprise local holidaymakers between July and August this year.

Today’s findings echo SiteMinder’s Changing Traveller Report, a study which found that 60 percent of German locals plan to travel before year-end, including a third in the next three months. Well-promoted health and safety practices are the greatest influence on their choice of accommodation, surpassing price.
