SiteMinder’s World Hotel Index: International travellers driving Spain’s Easter hotel booking boom

  Posted in Press Releases

Berlin, Germany – Travellers from overseas are an important factor in the strong hotel booking numbers that Spain is witnessing in the run-up to Easter, shows SiteMinder’s World Hotel Index. On April 10, 2022, Spanish hotel booking volumes stood at 110.43% of those recorded for the same period in 2019, underpinned to a considerable degree by international bookers, with a significant majority (55.83%) of all hotel bookings this month coming from abroad. Likewise, over half (54.02%) of hotel guests due to arrive in April are set to come from outside Spain.

Emphasising the role of the Easter Holidays in the recent strength of hotel bookings compared to 2019, 39.48% of all guests who booked with a Spanish hotel in two weeks prior to April 10 were due to arrive this month. The figures also offer encouraging signs for the summer, with 30.59% of guests who booked in the past two weeks due to arrive between June and August.

The strong figures prior to the Easter holidays come despite a dip in hotel booking numbers in early March, with these falling slightly from 107.79% of 2019 bookings on February 23 to 96.71% on March 2. On March 5, bookings rose back to more than 100% of those made in 2019 in the same period, and have not fallen below since. This emphasises that consumers continue to consider travel a priority, and are continuing to book trips in increased numbers compared to three years ago.

Spain’s hotel industry also continues to perform well in comparison to other countries in the region. Globally, hotel bookings averaged 90.37% of 2019 bookings for the same period as measured on April 10 2022, while France sat at 100.17%, Italy 92.73% and Malta 83.5%.

Within Spain, Barcelona stands out for its particularly strong performance, registering 115.98% of 2019 hotel booking numbers as of April 10, while other major cities which have surpassed their 2019 booking volumes in recent days include Madrid, Malaga, Valencia and Seville.

Sara Padrosa, Country Manager for Spain at SiteMinder, says: “Spain’s accommodation providers will feel encouraged by these latest figures, which underline the extent to which our country is an enduring favourite among travellers from around the world, making its hotel industry resilient to various kinds of external shocks. However, hoteliers should avoid complacency. Today’s hotel guests have high standards, and expect a consistent, frictionless and personalised customer experience. Those hotels who are able to guarantee this are the ones who will be best placed to increase their share of a market which is growing yet highly competitive.”
